Message from the Interim Dean #

Greetings, Social Work Students!

It is with much excitement that I write to welcome each of you to the 2023-24 Academic Year! I sincerely hope that your summer was safe and productive. I also hope you are enthusiastic about beginning or continuing your educational journey in social work.

Whether you are a new or returning student, please take a moment to reflect on your motivation for pursuing professional education and training in social work. Please remember the mission and values of the social work profession. At this very moment, our nation and world need helping professionals who are seriously concerned about the human condition. Our nation and world also need helping professionals who are deeply committed to promoting human well-being and social and economic justice for all. Through “social work,” human lives are enriched, and our collective world is made better. As you begin coursework this Fall, keep your reflection and the status of the world in mind as you pursue the knowledge and skills necessary to help others effectively.

I also encourage you to take full advantage of the resources and support available through the School of Social Work and Indiana University. Engage and get to know your instructors. Forge bonds with your colleagues. Apply for scholarships. Get involved in the Social Work Student Association on your campus. Participate in professional development events organized by the school’s Office of Career Services. If challenges occur over the semester or academic year, connect with your academic advisor and program director. Please know that the faculty and staff of the School of Social Work are committed to your success!

Best wishes for a successful academic year, and please let me know if I can assist you.

Dr. Jeffry Thigpen
Interim Dean
