This article will include findings from a mixed method survey at a large mid-western university that examined student perceptions about what leads to inclusive dialogues in social work classes regarding the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. Questions asked how instructors could facilitate this dialogue fairly given the passionate emotions and different viewpoints surrounding the election. Findings from this study illustrated the challenges that students faced in having these conversations, and their recommendations for social policy instructors on how to facilitate class dialogues around the election and the Trump administration sensitively.

Boys, S. K., & Walsh, J. S. (2018). The Dilemma of Spare Embryos After IVF Success: Social Workers’ Role in Helping Clients Consider Disposition Options. Advances in Social Work, 18(2), 583-594.
Social work services for persons undergoing the in vitro fertilization process (IVF) has greatly lagged behind the medical technology opportunities provided to these clients. Advocacy for social work services for persons undergoing IVF was advanced upon the procedure’s initial development, but there has been a stark lack of recent scholarship regarding social work in fertility health services. The existing literature suggests several talking points regarding the IVF process to be discussed with persons considering IVF, especially the medical and psychological risks of failure. This article discusses a newer and necessary topic to cover in pre-IVF counseling: the possibility of too much success in the form of excess embryos. Although the topic must be covered with sensitivity to the relatively low rate of IVF success, persons receiving care through assisted reproductive technology (ART) need to be prepared for the difficult moral questions raised when IVF procedures result in even more embryos than intended. Social workers need to be prepared to explore the pros and cons of each disposition option with IVF clients.

To become competent,humane,public servants, students must not only understand the theories and best practices in their field, they must also learn how to apply them on the job. Public servants conceive of their primary mission as promoting the public welfare, typically by working in public agencies or nonprofit organizations. Because most public service jobs require interpersonal contact that is either face to face or voice to voice (Guy, Newman, and Mastracci, 2008), it is essential that students have the opportunity to practice these skills under the watchful eye of experienced teachers, not only in the classroom but also in the field. This type of learning is a systematic approach to applied learning and has evolved out of experiential learning theory, which defines learning as “the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combination of grasping and transforming experience” (Kolb, 1984,41). In this chapter, we share strategies for relating classroom learning to the real world of public service using the disciplines of public administration, social work, and criminal justice. To help students apply what they have learned in their classes, each profession has adopted, formally or informally, signature pedagogies that organize “the fundamental ways in which future practitioners are educated for their chosen professions” (Shulman 2004, 52). Although these signature pedagogies have proven to be valuable resources, they are not the exclusive domain of any field of study. The disciplines represented here have borrowed liberally from other disciplines in developing their signature pedagogies and vice versa. In the following sections, we discuss the experiential learning methods of the case study, the practicum, and internships. We identify the benefits and limitations of each signature pedagogy and make it possible for educators to reflect on the utility and applicability of these signature pedagogies across the curriculum. We conclude with a comparison of the benefits and limitations of these signature pedagogies in an effort to begin discourse on creating best practices for experiential learning in general.
