The Indiana University School of Social Work (IUSSW) announces a new $1,000 scholarship opportunity for pre-social work students created by Jewel Mosley, BSW student services coordinator & recruitment specialist and associate faculty for the IUPUI campus.

“As a 1st generation student, I grew up economically disadvantaged with minimal social/cultural capital,” said Jewel Mosley. “I had immeasurable odds stacked against me. These experiences have shaped me to become the advocate and helper I am today. The scholarship was created to address barriers to access and foster belonging, connection, and safety. My heart pours out to under-appreciated populations, particularly women of color. Tamara Winfrey-Harris, president of the CICF Women’s Fund, said it best, ‘Across the country, women have made tremendous gains…but also, we face some unprecedented challenges.’ ”

The scholarship will be given annually to 1) an incoming freshman on the IUPUI campus, 2) a student who is interested in social work as a career, 3) a first-generation college student, and 4) a student who has a financial need.

Indiana University is committed to diversity and special consideration will be given to underrepresented populations; the Donor has a preference for an African American single mother caring for dependent(s) under the age of eighteen. Funds will be available to students beginning in Fall 2023.

In addition to scholarship funds, the awardee will be invited to participate in several educational equity programs that offer wrap-around services to those who may experience attrition/ retention points during their first year at Indiana University, IUPUI. Educational equity partners in the Division of Undergraduate Education are learning allies who assist with the emotional needs of students. Partners can connect and reconnect with students if additional resources are needed.

Mosley is an advocate for transformative education and has been a long-time member of the Transformative Education Community of Practice at Indiana University, IUPUI campus.

“Students who have faced the disempowering nature of educational inequity come to us with a broad set of needs,” said Mosley. “Transformative education is about possibility—the possibility that everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, develop, and contribute. Through the lens of educational inequity, many face limited opportunities, considerable barriers, and diminished life chances.”

Dean Tamara Davis, IUSSW, stated, “what a tremendous gift Jewel has given to future social work students and to the School! This scholarship combined with the tremendous other support Jewel provides to our students truly reflects her commitment to student success.”
